hi, i have a home based business in richmond, virginia & specialize in repairing antique quilts. because i focus on vintage textiles i get a lot of inquiries from the public for all the things i don't do & can't offer & i hope this will reach people who can meet this need. i do not appraise, clean, or offer buy/sell services.
typically, the person who inherits an old quilt does not sew, is not connected to a quilting community & doesn't know much about it. quilt shops & guilds don't necessarily offer cleaning & appraisal info & i'm not sure how much of a market there is for old quilts. i have never had anyone call me to BUY an old quilts but lots of people have quilts to sell. a QUILT STORY SHOW & TELL event would be great & enjoyed by all. the public could be invited to come & talk about whatever they know about their family quilt & maybe someone in the audience knows something about it. this could be done locally or online. since i don't offer his i honestly don't know if this is a fund raiser for your church or community group or just a crowd pleaser but i know the public is interested. appraising the value needs to be done by an antique dealer or someone in retail or a certified quilt appraiser but i've never believed the cleaning & care clinic needs a professional. could be someone who's always had quilts around & always taken care of them, maybe someone who doesn't sew any more but can offer consultations on how others can care for their items. i'm really not trying to drum up business here, folks. this is an idea i've tried to promote for years but usually i'm too busy to just pursue it. only when i'm slow with orders do i have time to try this. quilts that are fragile now will not last into the next generation if allowed to deteriorate so anything we can do now to offer to support to the people who have inherited a family quilt in disrepair can only help. thx for caring. i think this makes a great meetup topic |
